A body or group of sorcerers and physicians that originated in Phrygia, which also included magic
ians, conjurers, soothsayers and exorcists. They were thought to be very powerful in the Mediterranean region. It is claimed that the discovered minerals, musical notes, fire, musical instruments of which they introduced into Greece, Crete, and Italy. Hercules was alleged to be their leader. A.G.H.
